How It Works
The Sandbagger Shield uses USGA handicap mathematics to evaluate the likelihood of a net score.

The Math Behind the Shield
Course Handicap
Calculated as (Handicap Index × Slope Rating) / 113, rounded to the nearest whole number. This converts a portable index into strokes for a specific course.
Expected Gross Score
A player's expected gross score is Course Rating + Course Handicap. Most rounds fall within a bell curve around this number.
Standard Deviation
USGA data shows the typical golfer's round-to-round standard deviation is approximately 3.5 strokes. We use this to build the probability distribution.
Z-Score & Probability
We calculate how many standard deviations the actual score is from expected, then convert to a probability using the normal distribution.
